LightningDuring a thunderstorm on the 3rd August 2004 I filmed
the lightning. It wasn't until I came to review
Image: 28th June 2005The footage was shot with a shutter speed of 10000, F1.6 & manual focus set to infinity. Each of the three rows below show one frame before the lightning strike, during and after, i.e. 1/25th of a second (PAL) apart. The MPEG-1 video includes audio which has not been re-synchronised with the picture. In otherwords when the lightning strikes there is a genuine 5 second delay before the audio can be heard even though the lightning strikes are NO MORE than a stones throw away, typically 200 - 250 feet (60 - 75 meters) as gauged by the fact that the lightning strikes in front of the houses and in one instance in front of the trees. Using the standard formula of counting the time interval between seeing the lightning and hearing the thunder and then dividing by 5 then the lightning should have been about 1 mile away... hmmm...
