8th London Kite Festival

Saturday 17th & Sunday 18th June 2000

With excellent weather and wind on both days, the London Kite Festival has been very successful again this year. We visited on the Sunday, it was incredibly hot and sunny with a quite variable wind, averaging about 10 mph.

After a quiet start, the public flocked in and were treated to plenty of clear blue sky, a multitude of kites of all descriptions, trick and ballet competitions, demonstrations in the arena, and a large open space in which to fly their kites.

There were only a few kite traders, which was surprising considering the size of the event. However there was a face painting stall and a "make your own kite" workshop for the kids (and a beer tent for the adults!).

Again, as in previous years, the festival was well organised, and the on-site car parking was very useful! (and free this year) It is a shame that Hackney Council do not provide funding for the festival any more, however the event organisers did an excellent job and kept the activities going in the arena throughout the day.

Here are the photographs from Sunday, click on any picture to see a larger version.

Welcome to Hackney Marshes, the flags are out, the beer tent open, and the bouncy castle inflated!

The sky is soon filled with colourful kites of all shapes and sizes

Down on the ground, with the temperature rising to over 30 degrees, a painting competition took place with Revolution kite flyers creating 'masterpieces' with their kites.

There was plenty of room to buggy at Hackney, especially in the morning when the field was almost empty!

A group of guys demonstrated kite jumping, using this stack of Flexifoils (with a Skytiger at the top!)

Here are some of the kites featured in the "Kites Through The Ages" demonstration, including the Friendship Kite (centre) which comprises the flags of 21 countries.

Four line kites were well represented at Hackney, here you can see a Nasawing, and two Revolution display teams (The Decorators in centre photo)
