Wellington Country Park Kite FestivalSunday 1st April 2001Location: off the A33 Reading to Basingstoke Road, Hampshire. April Fool's Day started slightly overcast but turned out to be a pleasant and (at times) warm day. However in the morning in particular, there was a distinct lack of wind! This did not deter the many people who attended - enthusiasm was everywhere, with the phrase "the wind should pick up soon..." being heard a great deal! This being the first main kite festival of 2001, it was a good opportunity to meet up with fellow kite fliers who we hadn't seen since last kite season. We were not disappointed - it was nice to see so many familiar faces, and also meet new people! The White Horse Kite Fliers were trialling a stack of 8 delta Conyne kites which they hope to expand into a large kite train by the end of the year. Once the wind had picked up a little, the kites flew well. A successful experiment! There were some new kite designs on show - Roy Broadley's new traction kite, the Apache, and Dot Designs' Darkside III (see below for photos). Andrew Beattie was on hand to provide the entertainment (sorry Andrew) as Veronica nearly took to the skies. At one point she was almost off the ground when a stray delta kite lurched towards her and brought her back down with a swift loop of the bridle. Andrew also proved a master at falling over and getting muddy (no doubt learned from his 2 year old daughter, Shona ;-) The kite festival was a small, family friendly event, with a kite making workshop and teddy bear dropping for the kids. As you can see from the pictures, there were plenty of trees (and water) around to cause problems / hilarity for the kite fliers!
Video:We are proud to be able to present to you: Veronica's
Big Day Out - humorous video action of Andrew Beattie's attempts
to get Veronica in the air. The clip is 1 minute long.
