11th Weymouth International Beach Kite Festival

Weymouth was blessed with good weather for all of this Bank Holiday weekend.
Lots of sunshine, clear blue skies and plenty of wind!
Saturday was The Kite Society's Annual
Convention, where there were kite making workshops, displays, lectures
and a Cody Symposium which featured Jean Roberts' huge collection of S.F.
Cody photographs and The Drachen Foundation's Cody memorabilia. Although
the kite festival had not officially begun, there were lots of kites being
flown on the beach. The Auction on Saturday night raised a lot of money
for the Kite Society, although at over two and a half hours for the auction,
it was tough going!
Sunday and Monday brought many thousands of people to Weymouth beach.
The wind was 15-20mph on both days, which was perfect for the kitesurfers
who spent hours out on the sea. Kite fliers were down on the beach as
early as 8am, to make the most of the beautiful weather.
There were many invited fliers from around the world, including Germany,
France, Switzerland, Holland and America. Team Xtreme demonstrated their
precision flying skills with AirDynamics T2 kites. There were Rokkaku
fights and Altitude Sprint competitions to entertain the crowds. On Sunday
night there was a night flying display on the beach, followed by a spectacular
firework display from a barge in Weymouth Bay.
All in all, a fun and friendly festival on a beautiful clean beach, well
worth visiting!
