Basingstoke Kite Festival

Saturday 8th & Sunday 9th June 2002
Location: Down Grange Playing Fields, Basingstoke,
Hampshire
Organised by: Loddon Valley Kite Flyers / Alan Cosgrove
After a misty and rainy start to Saturday, the weather brightened
up for this, the 10th annual Basingstoke Kite Festival.
There were lots of invited kite fliers including Team Zoone
from France (with their collection of unusual kite designs), Jannoeke
Groen and kite groups from Holland, as well as kite groups and teams from
the UK, including The Flying Squad, Wigsley Wings and Matrix Management.
Zoone brought four Raymond kites and I enjoyed flying my
own Raymond with them in the arena, despite the rain.
Carl Robertshaw put up an arch of Delta Serpents, and also
entertained the crowd with kite flying displays - one of which was in
the pouring rain with almost zero wind, resulting in him running around
doing 360's with his kites!
Later in the afternoon, the wind picked up and the sky was
blue. Andrew Beattie flew his Gecko, Manta Ray, and Veronica the octopus.
The Flying Squad demonstrated multi-line flying, there were Rokkaku fights,
and Wigsley Wings put up their large inflatable kites, including a penguin,
teddy bear, and giant bol.
Later, in the marquee, there was food and drink and a chance
to view the "Snail Rally" - a collaboration between Roy Broadley
of Kites Up and Paul Morgan of Sky Bums. Their collection of snail-related
paraphenalia filled a whole display cabinet!
