Portsmouth International Kite Festival

Saturday 24th - Monday 26th August 2002

Location: Southsea Common, Portsmouth.
Organised by:
The Kite Society

We visited the Portsmouth International Kite Festival on the Sunday of this Bank Holiday weekend. As always, Southsea Common was packed with people keen to watch the kite demonstrations, and have a try themselves.

Although the wind was light at times, the sun was plentiful which contributed greatly to the friendly and relaxed atmosphere. There was a wide variety of demonstrations in the main arena, including multi-line kite teams Flic and The Flying Squad, a rokkaku fight, altitude sprints, the Avon Kite Fliers club kites, traction kiting and an amazing display by Gruppo Aquilonisti Vulandra from Ferrara in Italy (see below!)

Peter Lynn was on hand to help with the giant inflatables which kept diving from the sky when the wind changed direction or died completely - along with Andrew Beattie who spent most of the day running around rescuing kites (and the people who they landed on!)

It is always good to see new things at a kite festival, so we were definitely not disappointed with Portsmouth this year - so many international kite fliers as well as groups and teams from around the UK, and many unusual kites in the air.

Here are the photos from Sunday, click on any image to see a larger version.
