Sunderland International Kite Festival

Paul Chapman with one of his Cody kites

Saturday 6th & Sunday 7th July 2002

Location: Northern Area Playing Fields, Washington, Tyne & Wear
Organised by:
Malcolm Goodman

Sections: Artistic Kites | Dragon Kites | Cody Kites | Unusual Single Line Kites | Large Delta Serpents | Miscellaneous

Once again, the Sunderland International Kite Festival proved that it is the biggest and best of all the UK kite festivals. Thousands of people flocked to the festival site over the weekend, encouraged by the unusually good weather!

Many international kite fliers attended and there was a wide variety of kites on show, particularly Cody kites and Chinese dragon kites. There were demonstrations from the British Buggy Club, Stephen Versteegh, The Flying Squad, Graham Lockwood, Stafford Wallace, Evolver, and many others whose names I can't remember!

The European Air Gallery was displayed and flown by the North East Kite Fliers, Wigsley Wings put on a spectacular display of large inflatables, and Andrew Beattie flew Veronica (the Octopus) and Anuj (the Gecko) high over the festival site.

The auction on Saturday night contained over 50 auction items, and raised over £4,400 for next year's event - an amazing amount, for an amazing kite festival! The photos speak for themselves...
