6th Streatham Common Kite Day

Easter Sunday 20th April 2003

Location: Streatham Common
Organised by: Bob Colover

The Streatham Common Kite Day was once again a success, with surprisingly good weather (despite the gloomy forecast) and lots of wind! The choice of date - Easter Sunday - also ensured that lots of families attended the event.

Bob Colover once again organised a variety of events that took place throughout the day, from guest kite flyers and teams, including the Brighton Kite Flyers, Andrew Beattie, Team Spectrum, Carl and James Robertshaw, Team Matrix Management, Team Adrenalize, and Ron Moody with his Indian fighter kites.

The wind was quite strong and blustery throughout the day, which meant that the teams used vented kites, and lots of care! Dunstable Kites' stall was busy all day with people purchasing kites, then returning for repairs.

The Brighton Kite Flyers' club kites, the Peter Lynn Teddy Bear and Octopus, flew over Streatham for most of the day, joined by Andrew Beattie's Manta Ray and Gecko kites (still with the desert dust from Ivanpah, USA on them from his trip there last week!).

Veronica the octopus made it out of the bag briefly in the morning, but after the Manta Ray's pilot kite broke free in the blustery winds, and the Gecko flirted with a tree, Veronica was swiftly put away. Andrew later buggied in the arena, using Veronica as a traction kite (a trick he learnt at Ivanpah), which was interesting... Andrew would like to say a big thank you to the person who returned his pilot kite, neatly folded in a bag, as it had drifted away after breaking free, and he thought he would never see it again!
