Brighton Kite Festival

Brighton Kite Festival Panorama

Saturday 10th & Sunday 11th July 2004

Location: Stanmer Park, Brighton
Organised by:
Brighton Kite Flyers

A big thank you to the Brighton Kite Flyers for organising this excellent event.

The site was split into three main areas: a single line and general public flying area, a demonstration arena, and a sport and power kite area.

There was a selection of food stalls, a good bar, plenty of kite traders, a raffle, a BBQ on Saturday evening, and plenty happening in the demonstration arena throughout the weekend. Saturday night also offered the opportunity to do a spot of downhill buggying whilst it was quiet. Thank you Dunstable Kites for the loan of the buggy :-)

The wind and weather on Saturday was a lot more than we could have hoped for. "A lot more" meaning 20-30mph winds and sunshine! Sunday was a little more cloudy but the wind was a lot more manageable, averaging 2-8mph. A little rain on Sunday afternoon nearly put the dampeners on the kite festival, but after a lot of encouragement by the commentator (who has to be commended for his positive attitude!) most people stuck around until the festival closed at about 5.30pm.

Here are a selection of photographs from the event, as always click on each image for a larger version.

Airbow in STACK UK Trick Out

Brian entered his very first STACK UK competition, the novice Trick-Out with an Airbow. It was the first time ever that an Airbow had been used in a Trick-Out.

For the final 30 second round he tried the tactic of flying two Airbows at once, hoping to impress the judges. Unfortunately the wind was light and he soon ran out of arena, however it did raise quite a few smiles!

Sport Kiting

Hezz had fun flying her Revolution 1.5 Vented and Joe Brown's mini Fury, that he had acquired in the Sunderland auction last weekend.

Joining Hezz in the Revolution fly-in was Faith, Gary Matthews and Dave Boyle. The 'Collectif' name seems now to have 'evolved' into "DIY Quad" :-)

Team Spectrum

Father and son display team Team Spectrum (Bryan and Carl) were just one of the many kite display teams, which also included Close Encounters (Marilyn & Alan Pothecary), Evolver (Carl & James Robertshaw) and Matrix Management (Doug Irvine, Doug Manners and Tony Shiggins).

And Finally...

Didier Ferment from France constructed two aeolian wind harps in the single line arena, which sang beautifully in the wind. Both Brian and Hezz were encouraged to climb up one structure (not at the same time may I add!) to play the wind harp, by pressing small hammers down onto the strings. Wonderful!
