24th Cervia International Kite Festival

Festival Internazionale Dell' Aquilone
24 April - 2 May 2004

Location: Cervia, Italy
Organised by: Claudio Capelli, Artevento

We arrived at Cervia on Wednesday 28th April, so we could experience the latter half of this 9-day long event. After checking into our hotel at 11pm we decided to head on down to the Mare e Vita which is the hostel where most kite fliers stay. Sure enough it was busy in the bar area, and we spent a good hour greeting friends old and new! A nice start to a pleasant holiday.

The weather was mainly very good; sunny or slightly cloudy on most days, but when the sun did come out it was lovely and hot! Ahh, the joys of being on the beach in Italy! (not to mention the Speedos!)

There was plenty to see at the festival, including the kite-making workshops which were held for both adults and children inside a large marquee. Outside there were art installations made out of natural materials such as driftwood, branches and feathers. A wall was created with recycled blue plastic bottles which shimmered in the sun. This was used in the "Notta dei Miracoli" (Night of Miracles) on Saturday night, with tea lights placed inside each holder to create a beautiful effect.

Many well respected kite fliers from all over the world attended - there are far too many to list! But I hope that I have managed to capture many of their kites in the photos below.

Once again Claudio and Caterina did a fantastic job in organising this event. It was most enjoyable for us and we congratulate them!

Gatherings

Lunch at Bagno Benito's was a daily event for Peter Lynn and co.

Always a long and jovial affair, accompanied by lots of sparkling wine, interrupted on occasion by kites rudely falling from the sky...

The Auction Sale took place on Friday evening and as you can see, was very busy!

Plenty of money was raised for next year's Cervia International kite festival.

On Sunday morning, at the Grand Hotel, the kite fliers took part in a special Parade.

After some food and wine, the procession trooped down to the beach waving kites, flags and banners, accompanied by an excellent band!
